As I look around my collection of fly fishing gear...it seems to me that some pieces are more important than others, but all valuable at the same time. I have picked up a few things that are more a matter of convenience...Items that make my fly fishing journey more enjoyable. And isn't that what we are out there for...to have the best time we could have? You betcha!! Did I really say that...sorry! Anyway, I bring to you a review of some of my favorite "gadgets" that make my life easier when heading out to the water.
The MAGNET ~ Now, when I started fly fishing, I never had a good place for my fly rod (haha...I'm learning!) and it was always in the way or falling somewhere. So, I decided to be proactive and go into a fly shop to see if there was something to hold up my rod, rather than sticking it in my windshield wipers! Wallah! The MAGNET...Perfect. Now, I have a rest stop for my fly rod while finishing gearing up.
The GREEN SNIPPERS ~ I never have liked clippers...they just get too dull too quick. I wanted something that would be more like a scissor, but retractable and sharp enough to cut tippet. My favorite gadget and one that not every one has, but should! Check out Cabelas for this one!
The SIMMS WATERPROOF POUCH ~ My phone and ipod fit perfectly and are tucked away. Peace of mind...hangs around my neck and stashes under the front of my waders...
After losing a pair of favorite sunglasses, I headed out to find myself a lanyard...no worries about taking off my glasses anymore. They are always around my neck instead of on the top of my head and then down the river!!! Ugh...
Silly me! Why do I bring a book to the river? I will be the first to admit that I don't have every bug memorized yet...So, I always have one of my hatch guides with me in case I need to do a little matching! One of the reasons that I took up fly fishing...to learn and study something that was absolutely fascinating!
Well, there is a sneak peak of what I bring out with me on my journeys. Some items of convenience and necessity. Sometimes you have to test out something new to see if it changes things for the better and makes you more effective. I'm sure a lot of you have a couple of fishing "must haves", gadget wise too...
gotta hit on the strap for the sunglasses,, I have lost countless glasses and straps, I cant quit putting them on my head and looking at the sky. strap or not they go in the drink... I saw somwhere a strap with a clip on it, so you can clip it to the back of a hat.. need to do something pretty soon about it,, just got a new pair of Gravity glasses and they be too coo to loose.
ReplyDeleteThose are good items.
ReplyDeleteThe waterproof pouch, and scissors especially.
Bigerrrr ~ I'm thinking a clip would do very nicely...I will look into that!
ReplyDeleteBrk Trt ~ The pouch is the best $20 I have spent on my gear...got dunked with it and came out dry inside...I was impressed.
Totally onboard with the magnetic rod holder (got a wood one made by a guy in our club) and Croakies for the sunglasses. Sort of got around the waterproof pouch...got a waterproof camera. And I don't take my cell phone on the water...I think the EMF from it scares off the trout. :)
ReplyDeleteThat magnet is really neat. I usually just stuff mine in a tree so it don't fall.
ReplyDeleteCool gadgets, and I am a sucker for gadgets. Gotta check in to the magnet and the clippers, fro sure.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff RD!!!
Pat ~ Well that it explains it! I will leave my phone behind one time and see if there is a different outcome! Lol.
ReplyDeleteAnthony ~ If I stuffed my fly rod in a tree, it would most likely come out tangled up with the fly still attached to the limb.
Mike ~ Thanks, hope you find the "must haves"...
ReplyDeleteAll handy items and I know you use all, but for me there is someone in my house that is always asking me do you really need all that stuff??
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I have to find one of those magnets, So cool.I never knew that made such a thing!

I need to check out the pouch...had a phone go for a swim last summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm used to having my fly in the tree with casting, at least this way I can say I did it on purpose. lol
ReplyDeleteBill ~ Answer: YES! I don't know how they would notice one more thing anyway, if you already have the collection going...
ReplyDeleteJohn ~ Check with your local fly fhop or building supply store.
Sanders ~ One of the best waterproof bags if you need to carry electronics or anything for that matter.
Anthony ~ Very funny! :)
Great review! I love having the hatch guide with me. Another is my bug shirt. Got to keep the mosquitoes from eating me :)
ReplyDeleteThe magnet...ingenious.
ReplyDeleteI don't knock you for having a bug guide. Like you said, it is all about learning. I know I don't pretend to know all their is to know about hatches, knots or anything for that matter :)
Dustin ~ Bug shirts and pants are really nice...that is true!
ReplyDeleteStephanie ~ I have to be guided somehow!! HAHA By the end of the summer...I will have graduated. :)
Good accessories all. The magnet has saved many a poor rod from being broken or someone driving off without it.
ReplyDeleteEverybody agrees that they are all good accessories. I like the cord for the sunglasses. I have some for mine, especially since my sunglasses are $500.00 perscription ones.

Ok, I really like all the gadgets shown, RD. I am thinking the Ol' Blog Cabin Angler better find one of those waterproof bags. Oh, by the way, a couple of classics phrases here that I use alot. "Youbetcha" and "Stuff".
ReplyDeleteI keep buying magnets and losing them. I've went through 3 so far!
ReplyDeletep.s. I know I still owe you some flies in the mail. I'll get to them soon.
Cofisher ~ Ready for another fishin' trip??
ReplyDeleteShoreman ~ No, I agree...I had a pair of Oakleys that weren't too cheap...I know, I know!
Mel ~ Maybe it's an Idaho-Utah thing...There's always a lot of "stuff" going on here!
