The Sow Bug and Sagebrush Adventure

This past month has been quite the brown trout month.  My friends and I have had some awesome trips out on the water.  Trying to find water low enough has been a tough job.  Reservoirs are releasing at a high rate and the snow hasn't even started melting in the higher elevations.  But, there is a bright side to this.  Our rivers will be healthier.  The last five years have been pretty dry.

So, it has been quite the adventure to sagebrush country as of late.  I definitely got some exercise as I had to run after a few.  But, well worth it.  These brown trout have quite the strength and sometimes I swear that there is an underwater gym that they workout at.  = )  Their shoulders are strong and they will fight.  Sow bugs were the main course and I can never tie enough of them up!  It is my go-to fly on these western tailwaters that I fish.  But, the high water has now caught up with us on most fisheries...  To the lakes!  Hahahaha

Enjoy the vid.  These friends of mine are mighty fine fly fishermen and I'm lucky to have such great friends to share river time with. We had such a great time catching long sticks of "butter".  You will see what I mean...

The James Taylor song was tailored to your video, nice work. I like to compare browns and rainbows as far as the fight is concerned to largemouth bass and smallmouth bass---when it comes to fight the brown and smallmouth have the upper hand! What size bug and weight/rod were you guys using? Congrats on an awesome trip!

    1. Funny you mention that, Bill. I went after smallmouth the other night for the first time. And the one and only that I caught, broke loose as I bent down to get my net... arggghhh LOL. Can't win them all! I will try again... I fish a 5wt 9 ft most of the time. And the size 18 sow bug is my go to... Tiny!

  6. I caught a brown trout once. At least I thought it was a brown. It was only 7 inches long so I'm not sure. Well done young lady.
